Headlands Performance

Built fast. Stays fast.

A slow store costs you customers before they ever see a product. Headlands is engineered from the ground up to load fast, stay stable, and feel instant — so your store scores well on Google's Core Web Vitals and converts at the top of its range.

Google's Core Web Vitals — the three signals that affect your rankings
LCP
Good
The most important image on each page — hero, banner, product photo — loads before anything else competes for bandwidth
CLS
Good
Space is reserved for images before they arrive, so content never jumps around while the page loads
INP
Good
Taps, clicks, and scrolls respond instantly — non-essential work runs quietly in the background
Google uses these three signals to rank your store in search results. Headlands is built to score well on all three — not as an afterthought, but as a fundamental part of how it's engineered.

Performance built in, not bolted on.

Most themes are built first, then optimized. Headlands is different — every layer of how the page loads was designed with speed in mind from the start. That means your store gets real, measurable gains without you having to do anything.

01 — First impression
Your page appears before it's finished loading
The styles needed to render what's visible on screen are delivered immediately. Everything below the fold loads quietly in the background. Fonts load without causing a flash of invisible text.
Above-fold content firstSection styles load on demandNo font flash
02 — Images
The right image, at the right size, at the right time
Images are typically the largest thing on any page. Headlands serves each image at exactly the right size for the visitor's screen, loads below-fold images only when needed, and makes sure your hero is never waiting in line.

03 — Interactivity
Each page loads only what it actually uses
Headlands breaks its functionality into over 40 separate modules. A product page doesn't load the code for a logo slider. Heavy features like image zoom only activate when a visitor actually uses them.

04 — Third-party apps
We protect what we can. And we're honest about what we can't.
Headlands loads styles for third-party apps only on the pages where those apps actually appear. Scripts injected by apps run outside the theme's control — we minimize the impact where we can.

05 — Feel
Fast to use, even while it's still loading
Headlands surfaces your most important content first, shows subtle loading states so nothing looks broken mid-load, preloads gallery images when a visitor hovers, and only loads the cart drawer's images when it's opened.

06 — Ongoing care
Performance doesn't regress between updates
Every update to Headlands runs automated performance tests before it ships. Code is minified and served from Shopify's global CDN. Performance is an active part of how the theme is maintained.

What's actually happening, and why it matters.

Page load & images
Critical styles load first
Only the styles needed for visible content are loaded immediately. Everything else waits. Your page appears faster.
Styles only ship where needed
Feature styles like swatches and quick-add only load on pages that use them. Smaller download on every page.
Fonts connect and load early
The browser starts fetching your fonts as soon as the page begins. Text appears sooner, without flashing.
Hero images get top priority
Banners, slideshow first frames, logos, and featured product images are flagged as highest priority. Your main visual loads as fast as possible (better LCP).
Space reserved for images
Every image container holds its dimensions before the image arrives. No layout jumping as the page loads (better CLS).
Video loads on demand
A preview image shows first. The actual video only downloads when a visitor plays it. Heavy media doesn't slow down the initial page load.
Interactivity & responsiveness
Scripts load after content
JavaScript doesn't block the page from appearing — it waits until the HTML is ready. Visitors see content sooner.
40+ independent feature modules
Each feature is its own file, included only where it's used. A product page doesn't load the code for a logo carousel.
Heavy tools load when used
Image zoom, product videos, and 3D models only download when a visitor interacts with them. Product pages stay lean by default.
Background work runs in idle time
Non-essential tasks wait until the browser has spare capacity. The page stays responsive while it's finishing up.
Scroll and tap handling optimized
Scroll and resize events are carefully throttled to avoid unnecessary work. Smoother scrolling, better responsiveness score (INP).
Cart and filters update without reloading
Adding to cart, filtering collections, and searching fetch only the part of the page that changed. Interactions feel instant.

Speed isn't a vanity metric. It's a revenue driver.

Google ranks faster stores higher. Core Web Vitals — how fast your page appears, how stable it is, how quickly it responds — are direct ranking signals. A faster store isn't just better for shoppers; it's better for organic traffic.

Slow pages lose customers before they convert. Even a one-second delay in load time reduces conversions. Headlands is built to minimize that risk at the theme level — the foundation everything else builds on.

Images are handled as a system, not an afterthought. Every image on every page loads at the right size, in the right order, with space reserved so nothing jumps. Consistent, automatic — not something you configure per section.

Your store only loads what each page needs. Headlands' modular architecture means a product page carries only product page code. No bloat from features that live elsewhere on the site.

Performance doesn't drift after updates. Every change to Headlands is tested automatically for performance regressions before it ships. You get improvements over time, not degradation.

One integrated stack beats eight separate apps. Presidio Plus is built to the same performance standard as Headlands — a single app embed instead of a stack of third-party tools each adding their own weight.

A note on third-party apps
Headlands can only control what it owns. Third-party apps — reviews, subscriptions, loyalty programs, live chat — inject their own scripts into your storefront independently of the theme. These are often the real reason a store feels slower than expected. We minimize the impact where we can, but the full store stack matters. If performance is a priority, being selective about which apps you install is just as important as choosing the right theme.

Less waiting. Less jumping. More converting.

A typical theme
  • Styles block the page from appearing until they fully download
  • Same large image file served on mobile and desktop
  • All site JavaScript loads on every page, regardless of what's on it
  • Content shifts and jumps as images finish loading
  • Videos and 3D models download on page load even if no one watches them
With Headlands
  • Content appears as soon as it's ready — nothing blocking in the way
  • Each device downloads the right-sized image for its screen
  • Each page loads only the features it actually uses
  • Space reserved for every image — zero layout jump
  • Videos show a preview image until the visitor clicks play

Start with a theme that doesn't make you fight for speed.

Headlands gives you strong Core Web Vitals scores, a stable layout, and a fast-feeling experience — out of the box, before you've added a single product.
